WHAT ARE YOUR CHANCES OF SURVIVAL?
Think you have a better chance of surviving a zombie outbreak than most? You might want to think again. According to several extensive studies done between 1976 and 2002, people have an uncontrollable tendency to believe they are superior to their peers in everything from disaster preparedness to popularity. In fact, this widespread defect in perception even has a name.
The Wobegon Effect is termed after a fictitious town created by radio personality Garrison Keillor, because in Lake Wobegon, “All the men are strong, all the women are good looking, and all the children are above average.” But research psychologist, Kim Orleans, warns that in reality at least half of all people are below average in any measurable category. Unfortunately, that’s not how we see it.
“85% of high school students surveyed think they’re in the top 50% in ability to get along with others, and 25% of those say they’re in the top 1%. What that means is there are a lot of kids feeling a lot more confident about things than they should.”
And this phenomenon doesn’t change as we grow older. A recent study of graduate students at Stanford’s Business School revealed that 87% think they’re in the top 50% of academic performance. 68% of professors at the University of Nebraska believe they are in the top 25% of teaching ability. 90% of drivers of all ages say they’re safer than average, and 75% of senior citizens think they look younger than their fellow seniors.
People across the board think they’re less likely than others to have heart disease, get fired, divorced, or be killed in a natural or man made disaster. In short, we think we’re smarter, tougher and better prepared than our neighbors.
So what does the Wobegon Effect mean when applied to a global zombie outbreak? It means that a whole lot of us are wrong about our chances of survival. Dead wrong…
I agree and i think i like you alex you have many good points, so are you ready!?!
I think my chances are pretty high
.308 is a good medium caliber
I think i am ready with my dragunov (svd) at hand and 8 good and ready friends by my side and i think i might be overly prepared but im always looking for more help so look me up all (lilpoison1221@yahoo.com)
Something that was never mentioned is a healthy dose of good luck. Something else is the mental fortitude to deal with all the crap that will be coming down the line. It won’t do you any good to be able to shoot a moving target at 500ft if you don’t have the fortitude to pull able to pull the trigger if you happen to know the zombie.
Preparedness, physical toughness, mental toughness, and a lot of good luck is what will see the humans that survive through.
Personally, I have the knowledge, but I lack the stamina really. I hope I have the mental toughness, I’ve gone to that place before, so I think I can get there again. And I sure as hell hope that my good luck holds out til the end.
i try to remember theyd want to r.i.p. and they’re not human…
There is more danger in the zombie apocalypse than just the zombies.
human threats would just make you pissy and then you’d want to kill them
i want ZRS to put out a zombi survival quiz for people to take
Good idea! We’ll work on it.
i can survive but ill need a group
Ohhh, Trust me If people are reading The ZRS site, They are or at least should be better prepared for when the dead rise then the average person. Lets face it, if we have thought about it, dreamed about it, and even went as far as to plan for it and arm yourself. you have to be better off than some Joe Schmo that works in a cubicle and has never even owned or fired a gun.
I look that those around me and know that I am more physically and mentally prepared. I don’t get WAST3D and eat tons of shit food with no exercise. I grew up climbing mountains studying wildlife, I know I’ll be much better off.
i do not think i could survive without help
amen. more people need to realize that.
a lot of us zombieheads get caught up in the Lone Wolf fantasy and think they’ll become lone, wandering heroes if it really happens.
but in all probability, not only will you need other people, you’ll probably be stuck with other people whether you like it or not (*ahem* family…).
hehe
