NEUROPATHY CAN’T EXPLAIN ZOMBIES

2009 April 17

Responding to a post about incorrect information given in Max Brooks’ Zombie Suvival Guide (see: Zombie Survival Guide Error #2), reader Zombie NeuropathyPatrick suggests that neuropathy, a disorder commonly associated with advanced diabetes, can explain how Zombies may be able to stalk humans without having any physical sensation whatsoever.

Tina Tockarshewsky, Executive Director of the nonprofit Neuropathy Association, refutes this argument:

“As neuropathy progresses it results in reduced, or altered, sensation in the arms and legs.  This is different from no feeling at all.  If left untreated patients could eventually lose sensation altogether and be confined to a wheelchair.”

I have family members with diabetes, and have seen first hand how people who’ve lost most of the feeling in their legs can still manage to walk.  But let’s not forget what we’re contemplating here: a Zombie able to grab, clutch, claw, tackle, chase, chew, bite, all without the ability to feel anything from the top of its rotting head, to its green and bloated feet.  This isn’t just about the legs and feet.

Neuropathy doesn’t seem to explain Brooks’ error, but as always I welcome further debate.

Leprosy. A mutated form of leprosy could be a cause of making a zombie. Assuming the gov’t doesn’t find/modify/create something intended to use as a weapon in war.

Leprosy would also explain the lack of feeling pain and still allow function moving around.

Also, the flesh-eating virus might be another starting point for the creation of zombies.

Imagine a regressive brain disorder(i think I called this correctly, correct me if I’m wrong) coupled with leprosy or the flesh eating virus. The brain disorder eats away at the brain’s functions, but through some quirk, only eats away the higher brain functions; leaving the “repitillian” brain. And since leprosy pretty much makes feeling pain moot, amongst other things leprosy does to the body, this combo could very well be the start of a brand new virus/bacteria that could cause zombiism.

alright I’ve been researching zombies on my own for awhile now and I am having trouble finding any solid proof that zombies even exist. Surviving a zombie invasion is my main purpose in life ^^ so i need to know if they are even real…

I want to add that numbness and lack of feeling are two very different things. Your foot can be numb to the point that you can’t sense the ground beneath you, but that doesn’t mean that you will have absolutely no sensation when someone saws off your leg.
